21-Day South Island Road Trip with Kids: A Realistic New Zealand Itinerary

The short answer: three weeks lets a family see almost the whole South Island without long days in the car. This one-way route runs from Christchurch to Queenstown. It goes up the east coast to Kaikōura, across to Nelson and Abel Tasman, down the West Coast to the glaciers, over the Haast Pass to Wānaka, through Lake Tekapo, and on to Queenstown and Te Anau for Milford Sound.

That's about 35 hours of driving and roughly 2,350–2,370 km over 21 days. Every driving leg is under 3 hours, and there are four rest days with no driving at all. The one exception is the Milford Sound day, which we suggest doing by coach.

How the pace compares with other guides:

  • NZ Family Travel puts a South Island loop at 10–14 days and about 2,200 km (NZ Family Road Trip Guide). An extra week here buys shorter legs and rest days.
  • NZ Tourism's advice for families is to stay at least two nights in a place, and three when you can (nz-tourism.com). That's what the rest days are for.
  • Only have two weeks? See the end of the post for which parts to cut.

Getting there: flights from the US

  • Nonstop to Christchurch: United flies San Francisco to Christchurch three times a week from December 4, 2026 to March 26, 2027 (Christchurch Airport, CAPA). It's the only US route in Christchurch Airport's 2026/27 summer schedule, and CAPA reports no other carrier flies it.
  • Any other time, or from another US city: fly into Auckland, then take the domestic flight to Christchurch, which Air New Zealand says takes about 1 hour 25 minutes (Air New Zealand).
  • Going home: Queenstown's direct international flights are to Australia (Central Otago NZ), so most US families fly home from Queenstown through Auckland.
  • Rental: picking up in Christchurch and dropping off in Queenstown is a one-way rental. Ask about any one-way fee when you book.

Before you plan: drive times in New Zealand run long

Tourism New Zealand's own travel-time calculator warns that its times "do not allow time for stops, windy roads, heavy traffic or the impact of weather conditions" (newzealand.com).

With kids, pad the times even more:

  • NZ Family Travel: keep drives to 2–3 hours a day with under-5s.
  • The Herinian, a New Zealand dad who has campervanned with his kids from 10 months to 12 years old: if the GPS says 3 hours, allow 5 (The Herinian).

The times below are routing estimates with no stops. Where we checked a leg against a regional tourism site or a government source, we've noted it.

Before you book anything, put it in one place. Twenty nights is a lot of bookings to track. The NZ Family Trip Planner is a Google Sheets planner for NZ family road trips. It flags long driving days, tracks your budget and bookings, reminds you about ferry and winter-road checks, and includes a ready-made 21-day South Island route. It's this route, ready to adjust for your dates.

Days 1–3: Christchurch and Kaikōura

Day 1: Arrive in Christchurch. Keep the first day gentle after the long flight, as NZ Tourism suggests. In the central city, Margaret Mahy Family Playground is free, open 24 hours, and has water play, slides, in-ground trampolines, and accessible toilets and changing facilities (Explore Christchurch).

Pick up child seats with the car. Under New Zealand law, children must ride in an approved child restraint until their 7th birthday. US seats only qualify if they meet FMVSS 213 and carry the New Zealand Standard "S" mark. Otherwise, NZTA says to hire one here (NZTA).

Day 2: Christchurch to Kaikōura.

  • Drive: about 2 hours 40 minutes. Kaikōura's official site gives 2 hours 30 minutes and 180 km (Kaikōura NZ).
  • Kids' stop: NZ Tourism notes Kaikōura's seal colonies "right beside the road."

Day 3: Kaikōura rest day. The main attraction at Whale Watch Kaikōura is giant sperm whales, which it describes as year-round residents (Whale Watch Kaikōura). Know the age rule before you book:

  • Minimum age 3. The captain can raise it on the day depending on sea and weather conditions (Whale Watch child policy).
  • With a younger child: one parent can stay ashore, or you can use an independent local childcare service, which Whale Watch lists on the same page.
  • Book ahead. Whale Watch says demand is high.

Days 4–6: Blenheim, Nelson and Abel Tasman

Day 4: Kaikōura to Blenheim. About 1 hour 50 minutes. Kaikōura's site gives 1 hour 45 minutes and 140 km.

Day 5: Blenheim to Nelson. About 1 hour 50 minutes. Nelson Tasman's official site gives 1 hour 45 minutes (Nelson Tasman).

Day 6: Abel Tasman day trip.

  • Drive: Wilsons Abel Tasman says Nelson to Kaiteriteri takes about 1 hour 15 minutes "in clear conditions," so plan on roughly 2.5 hours round trip. Its day trips leave from Kaiteriteri, with check-in at least 20 minutes before departure. Parking gets busy in summer (Wilsons Abel Tasman).
  • Water taxi: NZ Family Travel's plan takes a water taxi in, then swims and explores Bark Bay or Anchorage. Bring lunch, because food options in the park are limited (NZ Family Travel 14-day itinerary).
  • For toddlers: NZ Tourism names Abel Tasman for easy beach days with calm, shallow water.

Days 7–10: Over to the West Coast

Day 7: Nelson to Murchison. About 1 hour 55 minutes; Nelson Tasman gives 1 hour 50. It's a short day, so take a slow morning and let the kids run around before you leave.

Day 8: Murchison to Punakaiki. About 2 hours, through the Buller Gorge, which NZ Family Travel describes as "stunning river canyon scenery."

At Punakaiki, the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes Walk is a short, paved walk that DOC calls "great for children" (DOC). Good to know:

  • Strollers: apart from an optional section with steps, it's suitable for wheelchairs with assistance.
  • Timing: the blowholes are best around high tide with a south-westerly swell.
  • Parking: NZ$2.50 per half hour or NZ$20 a day, card only.
  • Safety: the return track comes out suddenly on the highway, so keep children from running ahead.

Day 9: Punakaiki to Hokitika. About 1 hour 15 minutes; West Coast NZ gives 1 hour 10 and 84 km (West Coast NZ family getaway). It suggests letting kids comb Hokitika's beach for pounamu (greenstone), crossing the suspension bridge at Hokitika Gorge, or panning for gold at Shantytown Heritage Park.

Day 10: Hokitika to Franz Josef. About 1 hour 55 minutes; West Coast NZ gives 1 hour 40 and 134 km. Its kid stops along the way:

  • the West Coast Treetop Walk and Tower Zipline
  • gold panning at Ross Goldfields
  • a detour to Ōkārito lagoon
  • a summer swim in Lake Mapourika

Days 11–13: Glacier Country and the Haast Pass

Day 11: Franz Josef rest day.

  • Kiwi: West Coast NZ suggests the West Coast Wildlife Centre to see rowi, New Zealand's rarest kiwi.
  • Short walks: mountain reflections at Lake Matheson and Peters Pool.
  • The glacier: NZ Family Travel lists the glacier valley walk as free and about 2 hours return. Helicopter flights are weather-dependent, so have a backup plan.

Day 12: Franz Josef to Haast. About 2 hours; West Coast NZ gives 1 hour 50 and 142 km. Its suggested stops:

  • the Salmon Farm café, about an hour south of Fox Glacier, where kids can feed the fish
  • the short coastal walks at Monro Beach and Ship Creek

Fill up in Haast before the pass.

Day 13: Haast to Wānaka over the Haast Pass. Allow about 2 hours 20 minutes. DOC lists Blue Pools car park as 1 hour 10 minutes from both Haast and Wānaka, and that's the figure we've used. Wānaka's official site puts the whole Franz Josef–Wānaka drive at 4.5 hours (Wānaka official site).

The Blue Pools Track is the big stop of the day (DOC):

  • Length: 3.2 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes return, on a gravel path with rocky sections.
  • Swing bridges: two of them. DOC says no jumping off the bridges.
  • Facilities: toilets, including an accessible one, at the car park.
  • Sandflies: DOC warns they "can be fierce here."
  • Water color: the pools are only blue when it hasn't rained recently.

Sandflies on the West Coast and in Fiordland: our sandflies guide covers which repellents work and the age limits for kids.

If you're packing repellent from the US, two we've already checked: Sawyer 20% Picaridin Lotion and OFF! Deep Woods Dry 25% DEET. Healthify NZ recommends a maximum of 30% DEET for children, and says picaridin isn't recommended under age 2 (Healthify). Check Amazon for current price.

Days 14–17: Wānaka, Lake Tekapo and Central Otago

Day 14: Wānaka rest day.

Day 15: Wānaka to Lake Tekapo. About 2 hours 45 minutes, the longest regular driving day. Split it with a playground or lunch stop.

Day 16: Lake Tekapo to Cromwell. About 2 hours 40 minutes. Fuel is at Tekapo and Twizel (Mackenzie NZ).

Optional Aoraki/Mount Cook detour. Mackenzie NZ lists Tekapo to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village at 1 hour 15 minutes, and the village to Twizel at 45 minutes. That makes a long day, so only add it if your kids travel well.

  • Kea Point Track is about 1 hour return from White Horse Hill Campground (DOC).
  • Hooker Valley Track reaches its first swing bridge in 15 minutes (DOC).
  • Parking at White Horse Hill is NZ$25 a day, or NZ$2.50 per half hour.

Day 17: Cromwell to Queenstown. About 55 minutes. Central Otago's official site puts Queenstown Airport about 40 minutes from Cromwell (Central Otago NZ).

Days 18–21: Queenstown, Te Anau and Milford Sound

Day 18: Queenstown rest day. NZ Tourism's family picks include the Skyline gondola and luge and a TSS Earnslaw cruise to a working sheep farm. Check operators for current prices and height or age rules.

Day 19: Queenstown to Te Anau. About 2 hours 15 minutes. Published figures vary: Visit Fiordland says allow 2 hours ("times allow for rest stops but not sightseeing stops") (Visit Fiordland), while RealNZ lists 2 hours 45 minutes for the 170 km (RealNZ).

In town, Te Anau Bird Sanctuary (Punanga Manu o Te Anau) is free during daylight hours (DOC). It has takahē, a kids' scavenger hunt, picnic tables and toilets.

Day 20: Milford Sound. We suggest the coach.

  • Why: the drive from Te Anau is at least 2 hours each way non-stop (NZTA), and DOC suggests planning an eight-hour day with stops and a cruise (DOC Milford Road tips).
  • The coach: RealNZ's coach-and-cruise day trip from Te Anau is a 7-hour day, from NZ$269 (RealNZ). Its Te Anau departures leave around 10am (RealNZ).

If you drive yourself:

  • Fuel and food: fill up in Te Anau and pack food. There are no shops or fuel stations on the road.
  • Toilets: public toilets are only at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford (DOC).
  • Phones: there's no cell coverage (Visit Fiordland).
  • Leg stretch: stop at Mirror Lakes, a 10-minute, wheelchair-accessible walk that DOC calls "great for children" (DOC).
  • Winter: between June and November you may need to carry chains. The road closes about eight days a year on average, mostly in winter (NZTA).

Day 21: Te Anau to Queenstown Airport, then home. About 2 hours 10 minutes. Leave plenty of buffer before your flight.

Campervan or car and motels for this route?

  • By age: NZ Family Travel's campervan review rates campervanning "excellent" for ages 5–8 and "difficult" under 2 (NZ Family Travel campervan review).
  • With toddlers: the same site says car hire plus motels or cabins is "much easier," because you get real beds and bathrooms.
  • On the West Coast: NZ Family Travel advises campervans to stay off gravel back roads, because insurance often won't cover gravel damage.

We compare the costs in What Does a Family Trip to New Zealand Cost?, and toddler-specific advice is in New Zealand Road Trip with a Toddler.

What families who've done it say. The Herinian puts holiday-park playgrounds ahead of glaciers. He once took his kids to a glacier and their verdict was "It's just cold ice." A holiday-park trampoline, on the other hand, was the "best day ever!" His advice is to prioritize parks with good facilities and always keep a rainy-day Plan B, such as a library, cinema or aquatic center. On a West Coast-heavy route like this one, that matters.

Only have two weeks?

The usual cuts are the top of the island or the Tekapo loop:

  • Skip the top of the island: drop Days 4–7 (Blenheim, Nelson and Abel Tasman). Kaikōura to the West Coast is then a long drive, so a shorter option is to start straight from Christchurch.
  • Skip the Tekapo loop: drop Days 15–16 and drive Wānaka to Queenstown directly. Wānaka's official site gives 1 hour via the Crown Range, or 1 hour 15 minutes via Cromwell, the route it recommends for campervans and in poor weather.

The trip planner will flag any day the cuts turn into a long drive.

FAQ

Is 21 days too long for the South Island with kids? No. NZ Tourism suggests 10–14 days for one island at a relaxed pace. Three weeks lets you add the top of the South and the West Coast while keeping every regular driving leg under 3 hours.

Is there a direct flight from the US to Christchurch? Seasonally, yes. United flies San Francisco–Christchurch three times a week from December 4, 2026 to March 26, 2027. Otherwise, connect through Auckland, which is about 1 hour 25 minutes from Christchurch by air.

Can toddlers go whale watching in Kaikōura? Whale Watch Kaikōura's minimum age is 3, and the captain can raise it if conditions are rough.

Should we drive to Milford Sound ourselves? You can, but it's at least 2 hours each way from Te Anau. A coach-and-cruise day trip means nobody has to drive the Milford Road with tired kids.

Can I bring my child's car seat from the US? Only if it meets FMVSS 213 and shows the New Zealand Standard "S" mark. Otherwise, NZTA says to hire one in New Zealand.
