What Does a Family Trip to New Zealand Cost? A 2026 Breakdown (Campervan vs Car and Motels)

The short answer: for a family of four, a 14-day campervan road trip runs about NZ$4,960–$7,800, not counting flights (about US$2,772–$4,359). That's the estimate from NZ Family Travel's campervan review (NZ Family Travel). The same site's 14-day both-islands itinerary, with accommodation, activities, food and fuel, budgets NZ$9,000–$16,000 for a family of four (about US$5,030–$8,943) (NZ Family Travel 14-day itinerary). These are NZ Family Travel's 14-day figures. They aren't a costing of our 21-day South Island route, which adds a week of beds, food and activities. The biggest swings come from where you sleep, how many paid activities you book, and, in 2026, fuel prices.

Below are the line items, with links to where every number comes from, so you can build your own budget.

💵 A note on currency

  • Prices in this post are in New Zealand dollars (NZ$) unless marked otherwise.
  • USD figures use the European Central Bank reference rate for 8 October 2026: NZ$1 = US$0.5589 (via Frankfurter). Exchange rates move, so recheck before you book.
  • MBIE's weekly average for the week ending 2 October 2026 was similar, at US$0.564 (MBIE weekly fuel price monitoring).

Before you land: entry fees and flights

NZeTA and the tourist levy. US passport holders need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before they fly. It costs NZ$17 in the official Immigration NZ app or NZ$23 on the website (Immigration NZ). Most NZeTA requests also carry the NZ$100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL), and it's non-refundable (Immigration NZ).

Every traveler needs their own, babies included (nz-tourism.com). For a family of four, that's NZ$468 through the app or NZ$492 online (our math: 4 × NZ$117 or 4 × NZ$123), about US$262–$275. Immigration NZ warns that some third-party sites overcharge, so use the official app or website.

Flights. Fares from the US change by season, city and how far ahead you book, so we haven't quoted a number. Price your own dates. NZ Tourism notes the US West Coast is roughly 12 to 13 hours nonstop to Auckland (nz-tourism.com).

What a New Zealand road trip costs per day

NZ Family Travel's road trip guide gives these daily ranges for a family of four (NZ Family Road Trip Guide):

StylePer day (family of 4)What it looks like
BudgetNZ$60–$100DOC campsites, own tent or cheap campervan, self-catering, free activities
Mid-rangeNZ$150–$250Holiday park cabins or campervan, mix of cooking and cafés, some paid attractions
PremiumNZ$400+Motels or hotels, restaurant meals, premium activities like cruises and jet boats

One caution: the same guide prices campervan hire alone at NZ$150–$250 a day. So treat these ranges as on-the-ground spending, and add your vehicle on top unless you've confirmed it's included.

A New Zealand dad who has campervanned with his kids for years gives a higher, all-in figure for a mid-range family campervan trip: NZ$330–$740 a day. That covers van hire (NZ$150–$450), diesel (NZ$40–$70), a powered holiday-park site (NZ$60–$100) and food (NZ$80–$120) (The Herinian). He calls the idea that campervans are the cheapest way to travel "a myth."

Campervan costs, line by line

NZ Family Travel's 14-day family campervan estimate (campervan review):

Daily rental rates by company. The same review lists family vans from about NZ$160–$220 a night (Jucy) to NZ$230–$310 (Maui), with luxury motorhomes at NZ$350–$500+. It recommends a self-contained van (with its own toilet) for families, at a typical premium of NZ$20–$40 a night.

Rates move with the season. The Herinian says a large 6-berth van "can easily cost $400 a day during the summer peak." NZ Family Travel advises booking campervans by August for December–January travel.

One way to save: relocation deals, where you move a rental van between cities for the company. The Herinian says these can cost as little as NZ$1–$5 a day, but you're tied to their dates and route.

Where you park it: campsite fees

Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites are the cheapest official option. Current DOC fees (DOC campsite categories):

DOC campsite typeAdult (18+)Child (5–17)Infant (0–4)
Serviced (flush toilets, hot showers, kitchen)NZ$25/night unpowered; NZ$20–$28 poweredNZ$12.50 unpowered; NZ$10–$14 poweredFree
Standard (toilets, water, more basic)NZ$10–$20/nightNZ$5–$10Free

DOC notes some sites have their own or seasonal pricing, so check each campsite's page. Commercial holiday parks cost more but come with playgrounds, pools and kitchens. The Herinian puts a powered site at a decent holiday park at NZ$60–$100 a night for a family of four. NZ Family Travel lists holiday park cabins at NZ$90–$160 a night.

Car and motels, line by line

From NZ Family Travel's road trip guide (NZ Family Road Trip Guide):

  • Car hire: from around NZ$40 a day.
  • Accommodation: NZ$120–$300 a night.
  • Holiday park cabin: NZ$90–$160 a night for a family.

For a 14-day trip, NZ Family Travel's itinerary estimates NZ$5,500–$8,000 for a rental car plus mid-range motels. That compares with about NZ$4,000 for a mid-range campervan (NZ$220 a day plus NZ$50–$70 a night at a holiday park) (14-day itinerary). The campervan review puts the campervan's saving at NZ$1,500–$3,000 over an equivalent car-and-accommodation trip.

What you get for the extra money: NZ Tourism points out that motels and apartments usually have a kitchen and laundry and parking at your door (nz-tourism.com). NZ Family Travel calls car-plus-accommodation "much easier" with toddlers and babies, and "the only sensible option in winter."

Fuel in 2026: check the current price

Fuel has been volatile this year. MBIE's national average prices for the week ending 2 October 2026 (MBIE, via Figure.NZ):

  • Regular petrol: about NZ$3.43 a liter (343.3 cents).
  • Diesel: about NZ$3.17 a liter (317.1 cents).

For comparison, diesel was about NZ$1.90 a liter in mid-January 2026. MBIE attributes the volatility to developments in the Middle East. So older per-kilometer fuel estimates, including some quoted above, may now be low. Build in a buffer.

Diesel campervans have one more cost: road user charges (RUC). In New Zealand, diesel prices don't include RUC (MBIE). NZTA's rate for a 2-axle vehicle up to 3,500 kg is NZ$76 per 1,000 km, and NZ$82 per 1,000 km for 3,501–6,000 kg (NZTA RUC rates). On a 2,000 km trip in a van under 3,500 kg, that's about NZ$152 (our math). Ask your rental company how it charges RUC before you sign.

The Cook Strait ferry (only if you do both islands)

If your trip covers both islands, the Interislander ferry between Wellington and Picton takes 3.5 hours (Interislander). Infants under 2 travel free, and the child fare covers ages 2–14 (Interislander fares).

NZ Family Travel's itinerary estimates NZ$200–$300 for a vehicle plus family. But Interislander says its May 2026 fare update reflects "higher than usual fuel costs," so price your actual sailing. A South Island–only trip, like our 21-day itinerary, skips this cost entirely.

Note: NZ Family Travel's itinerary lists a Milford cruise from NZ$89 an adult. RealNZ's own site shows its cruises from NZ$179, so always check the operator's current price.

Free and nearly free days stretch a budget. Examples:

  • Te Anau Bird Sanctuary is free in daylight hours (DOC).
  • Margaret Mahy Family Playground in Christchurch is free (Explore Christchurch).
  • Te Papa in Wellington is free to enter (nz-tourism.com).
  • DOC short walks like Mirror Lakes on the Milford Road (10 minutes, wheelchair accessible) cost nothing (DOC).

NZ Tourism's advice: pick two or three "big ticket" activities and fill the rest with free adventures.

Food

  • Groceries: about NZ$40–$60 a day for a self-catering family (NZ Family Travel road trip guide).
  • Mixed eating: NZ$90–$150 a day for food, in NZ Family Travel's 14-day itinerary.
  • Saving tip: NZ Tourism suggests big supermarkets like Pak'nSave or Woolworths for picnic lunches, and a motel or holiday park unit with a kitchen.
  • On the road: rural service stations are far apart and expensive, so a snack stash in a cooler bag helps (NZ Family Travel).

What the reviewers found. The Herinian, a New Zealand dad who has campervanned with his kids for years, says big vans "drink fuel, especially in the mountains," and that with kids you'll want paid holiday parks for power, hot showers and playgrounds rather than free camping (The Herinian). NZ Family Travel's review adds that LPG for heating and diesel for driving "add up more than budgets often anticipate" (campervan review). Both are good reasons to budget campsites and fuel at the top of their ranges.

Ways to bring the total down

  1. Travel in the shoulder seasons (March–May, September–November) for lower rates (nz-tourism.com).
  2. Book the big things early. NZ Family Travel's list is campervans by August for December–January, the Cook Strait ferry 3–6 months ahead for peak periods, and holiday parks 4–8 weeks out in school holidays.
  3. Mix DOC campsites with holiday parks if you're in a van. Kids under 5 stay free at DOC sites.
  4. Cook most meals. This is where a campervan or a motel with a kitchen pays for itself.
  5. Check relocation deals if your dates are flexible (The Herinian).
  6. Watch NZ school holidays. NZ Tourism notes the long summer break runs from mid-December to late January or early February, with roughly two-week breaks in April, July and late September into October. Prices and crowds rise in those windows.
